Anyone thinking that the Zune will allow sharing non-DRMed songs via Wi-Fi without restriction is dreaming...It's so obvious that MS wanted to create confusion by saying that "individual files won't have DRM added".Yeah it's true, individual files won't, but the whole Zune will act as a DRM wrapper for all files at once...The Zune will act as a secure vault. You won't be able to extract files from this vault into your computer, and the Zune will impose restrictions to playing files inside the vault even if the individual files don't have DRM.The iPod appears as a standard USB drive to a computer, and songs can be retrieved quite easily by looking inside invisible folders. The only problem is that the song files have cryptic names, but that can be fixed since the metadata is intact. There are utilities to extract songs using the iTunes database file on the iPod which is not encrypted, and was cracked a long time ago and Apple didn't do anything to prevent this.The Zune on the other hand will use a proprietary Microsoft DAP protocol to transfer and store media files. Maybe the "disk" part will appear as a USB drive, but the media vault will be unaccessible via standard means.The Zune will be much more closed and proprietary than the iPod, its sad to see people being blinded by the "Wi-Fi sharing advantage".

The teenagers are going to eat the Zune up because they can wirelessly share music with friends. MS may not crush Apple, but they will severely dent them and I for one can't way to witness it!

"The only 'cool' brand Microsoft has ever been attached to is the Xbox(360) brand, which has only ever been cool because of the games (made elsewhere by 3rd or acquired 1st parties) *despite* its association with Microsoft. Microsoft can't be cool - it simply cannot happen. Everything associated with Microsoft is considered middle-of-the-road and totally unhip. They will never unseat the iPod and frankly, they don't deserve to... Zune offers up nothing compelling. It's boring. "Oh wait and the IPOD is just sooooooo extraordinary! Sorry, but there's no device on the planet that compares to my 360.

What you forget is that Apple can still evolve the iPod over the next 1-3 years. They have a head-start, and it won't disappear because of the Zune.

I definitely wouldn't call myself a fan. All I'm saying is that while it is a 4:3 ratio just like the iPod, it is primarily meant to be handled like a PDA. Also, so now anything that has a circle on it is going to be derivative of the iPod?
