gizmodo.com — A tipster sent us these spy pics of what he says is the upcoming cheap version of the TiVo Series 3 personal video recorder, which is rumored to be a sub-$300 HDTV digital recorder to be available this fall. The spy tells us this is a prototype of the forthcoming box, and if you squint, you can see two CableCARD slots

And? This doesn't keep them from using GPLv2 software. Hell, they're welcome to use GPLv3 software too, as long as they're willing to let the user actually use modified versions of it...

... and the CableCARDs won't work right. The cable company will come out to your TiVo, shrug their shoulders, and walk off.I tried to get a CableCARD for my TV and no one would work with me to get it working (cable or TV support). It's a great idea, but no one wants to help because it gives the consumer control.

Longtime tivo-er here. No lifetime buyout, no deal. And Tivo also forced people who had bootstrap images online to take them off making it harder to recover from disk failure by yourself. Hate to break it to you TiVO, you *were* good, you were good.

I've got the normal version of the TiVo Series 3 and I didn't have any problems getting Verizon to hook me up with working CableCARDs.

The DISH 622 is great. TiVo is great too, but expensive.

By FCC LAW they have to offer you CableCards. If you want them, call and bitch. I have a Tivo 3 with 2 cable cards. They came out, stuck them in my Tivo and called in some numbers on the screen.

$15/month is alot of money. Thats $900 after 5 years. I would much rather pay a large up front cost and have no monthly fees. I bought a lifetime subscription off ebay when I got my Tivo 3. I plan to get a 1TB external drive and keep this thing around for a long time. In the end I'll save a lot off the monthly fees.

Yep, exactly.I have a long history with tivo. I bought one the first day they were available in my town, I was part of the team that first figured out how to add additional storage to the box, I've given away 11 of them as gifts over the years, and convinced many other people to go out and buy one. I was a HUGE tivo fanboy.Currently, though, I don't have a single tivo hooked up in my house, having replaced them with DirecTVs new HD-DVRs. I could almost swallow the price tag of the S3, but that price tag PLUS a monthly fee?f**k you, tivo. f**k you right in your f**king ass.
