gizmodo.com — Google's evolved the Android UI and it looks a lot better than it did before, with animations and an overall look and feel that seems more iPhone/HipTop than Windows mobile. They keep improving like this, Android could really be great.

To me, I'm not expecting a iPhone competitor. I'm expecting a Windows Mobile competitor. Both are open-y in the way that anyone can implement them and tweak as they want. It's licensed under Apache Open terms (I think), and I think companies can tweak the OS without having to give up their source, so they're more likely to greedily develop better versions. I guess that is good if great phones come from it. I just hope people rise up and make great apps. It's not going to matter much if apple opens up that iPhone SDK wide this month.

And you don't even need Eclipse. Any Java development environment with jdk 1.6 and ant will do; you just can't use the Eclipse plugin.
