madpenguin.org — Mandrake Linux was one of the founding fathers, and up until their recent purchase of Conectiva Linux (and subsequent name change to Mandriva), they've reigned right along side other big-name contenders such as Novell/SUSE, Red Hat, Linspire, and Xandros... and you know what?

I'll wager my Slackware against any of those distros..

I dislike the whole merger entirely. If you look on their site, you can't even FIND a free version anymore. If it's there, it must take some digging, more than I care to put in. It's sad, really, because I liked Mandrake pretty well. Yet another Linux distro selling out, I guess.

Yeah FyberOptic, they really try hard to push the membership thing. If it cost 1/2 of what it currently does, I wouldn't mind. But if you go to distrowatch.com they do list the free mirrors when it is released to them, so it's not so bad.The problem I have is when a distro costs $60-$100, which makes it as expensive as a cheap version of windows. One of the primary sell points of linux is that it costs less than windows. Distro makers cannot forget that.

When I installed the last version of Mandrake (before it was changed over), they had the multiple versions and all, and I found out the hard way that the free version was in fact limited. It didn't include the Radeon hardware 3d support, for example, which resulted in me having to get the drivers from ATI's site and spend forever rebuilding most of X.org and its related software to get it to work. The retail version supposedly included this already.I just won't pay for Linux when I can find another distro possibly just as good (or better) for free. I don't think it's fair for a company to profit from something when they didn't even make a majority of it.

I just got Ubuntu this week. It is my first Linux experience and I'm really digging it. It has kinda a steep learning curve, but there is a really nice guide out there and their forums are helpful.

mandrake/mandriva what ever you call it, it's still crap. linspire=crap '$linspire+$mandriva'=a big pile of sh1t. Slackware is great but over most peoples heads. use debian if you want a good uncomplicated distro at no cost. Ubuntu is easy its Debian for the Proletarian (Amateur)
