chron.com — "The first Dell Inc. store opens Tuesday in an upscale Dallas mall, but company officials insist they're not abandoning the computer maker's strategy of selling directly to customers over the phone and the Internet."

Though the Apple store in Northpark is located on the bottom level with all the designer shops, theres a few on top but most of them are your more hum drum places, thats where the dell is, guess they are marketing to the right set.

@VAXcat: Complain to the sellout bands/labels, not the companies that use their products for marketing. And from the article, "There will be no inventory. Rather than walking out with a laptop computer under their arm, shoppers will place orders that will be shipped to their homes." So yeah, this is basically one big kiosk with sales people floating around inside. They just wanted a little more presence. They have a kiosk at the Galleria here in Dallas already, this will just give them a fake shop where you can demo and touch/feel the systems and accessories before you order them online. I really hope they have their business line of products there (Latitudes etc.) as well as their cheap, shoddy consumer-level products. There's a world of difference between the two.

@josegutz: We already have at least 3 Fry's in the Dallas metroplex..how many more do we need? I think they should tear down the one in Garland and build it a little further west. That country/western Fry's is the stupidest, dirtiest old Fry's I've ever been in. The one in Plano is better, and the one in Vegas was pretty cool also.

@ popfrogs... Hey Props to ya... I agree about that Country/western thing... Whenever I went to that store I felt like asking where the jeans section was... Just a Hoorrrible concept... Country/Western and TECH DO NOT MIX people! Kids.... do not try that at home...

Why will this "store" not work? Two reasons:1. People like the immediate satisfaction of purchasing a computer. If people, especially in the upscale Northpark Mall, can't take home their computer, they might look elsewhere.2. They're across the hall (and upstairs) from the Apple store in Northpark Mall. The lower level has a lot of foot traffic, but the upstairs doesn't due to both stores being in the new expansion of Northpark Mall.Dallas has also been the site of one of the ill-fated Gateway Country Stores. We'll see if we're the demise of the Dell stores too.-Aaron-

used to work for Gateway as well, the problem they had all these ideas and they would start to implement something and then after they started seeing it fail they stopped it. The problem with the retail stores was people came in wanting to get a system then and they found out that they would have to wait, also tons of hardware issues like the power supplies and video cards (under powered power supplies that would fail, and video cards without proper cooling). During the time that I was there (3 years in KC until i was laid off), they only made a profit once or twice, both times they made a profit due to cutting costs down to nothing along with cutting peoples hours or requiring them to take 1 week unpaid vacation during the holiday season. Also Sr. Management had a very high turn over rate, during my time I think I saw 15 or so VPs come and go.
