macslash.org — A Windows version of the handy app Portable Firefox has been available for some time now. However, a cross-platform version has recently been released, that works on both Windows and OS X at the same time, keeping data for both operating systems in sync.

"Great for a quickie at the hotel before a big meeting!"That's wrong on so many levels...But it made my whole morning a little bit brighter! I love laughing at unintentional humor.

So I keep hearing about this Digg phenomenon, and finally decided to check it out this morning. And then I see the top story points to something I posted at MacSlash. It must be a sign this place really is as cool as everyone's said. :)

I don't know what all the excitement is about this. At home I use what I want - when I come to work I use what work tells me. Both the IT department and my employer wouldn't be too pleased with me using a device that allows me to circumvent their security. Not to mention the fact that I nor my friends would be too appreciative if going to either house and plugging in a device and doing what I want.I would assume this would be the case at Colleges, Libraries, etc. Am I wrong? where does this come into play? give me some understanding on this!

Interesting to see my story dug, since I'm the original submitter to MacSlash. I originally submitted it to Digg as well, but the URL to Portable Firefox for Mac was rejected, not because of being a dupe either, but some other error that escapes me.

Clemontor, i'm in college and work for a big technical corporation on off-quarters. Although i don't know what your business allows, there are no restrictions to using usb devices at either of my locations. A Firefox installation on a usb device therefore can be used. USB sticks simplify data transfer and are very commonly used also at both places. At work i can download and install any browser to my own computer, so I am not breaking any security rules by using my own Firefox install. I use usb Firefox simply so i dont have to reapply the same browser settings (bookmarks etc) everytime i am on a different computer. Likewise, if i add more bookmarks or passwords i only have to add them to one firefox installation. And it sounds like your friends arent very tech savvy if they would think it odd if you plugged a mini storage device into their computers. In fact maybe you can impress them by whipping one of these babies out! Really i don't see anything that "circumvents security" about this at all. Firefox is more secure than IE after all, isn't it? Hope this helped with your understanding.

The link to download the Mac OS X/Windows XP version of Portable Firefox given in the Macslash news story - http://www.theplaceforitall.com/portablefirefox - seems to be dead. I just keep getting "www.theplaceforitall.com/ could not be found. Please check the spelling and try again". Same happens when I tried getting there through a Google search, or other websitesAnyone know where else the cross-platform Portable Firefox can be downloaded from?Ta.
