A hardware firewall(which a lot of the nicer routers have built in) works just fine without a software firewall. You just need to do some research and configure it properly. Not for the new users, but for someone who can take the time to read a few pages of information it is a great way to have one less resource hog running on your computer.
Not to be the historian here, but DOS was actually IBM's P.C. Disk Operating System. DOS was around on the 8086 for quite some time before Microsoft bought it from IBM. Microsoft DOS was dying, and nobody was using it, so they purchased IBM's PC DOS and "added to it". It eventually become Desk Manager (or something like that) which was a console based GUI style app. [similar to XTree or Norton Commander]. Later Desk Manager (not DeskMate), became Windows 3.0 / Explorer.Windows 2.0 only had a calculator and a clock if I recall correctly. I remember running on a CGA/EGA card and it sucked. GeoMate (or something like that) was far superior, but it just couldn't compete with the Microsoft mouse. All clear?
You can also see "who's connected" on a LInux and Mac box.Linux has a similar tool:etherape is a cool graphical representation monitoring bandwidth.http://etherape.sourceforge.net/MAC OSX has a similar tool: open up the terminal and type: lsof -iWorks well for finding out whats using up all your bandwidth or just finding the location of a bandwidth using process.

This is why I wish we could delete our own comments on Digg. I didn't mean to clog the tubes with my stupidity. Digg it down, digg it way down.
