I just want to say that WIndows password is not safe, some tools can remove it easily such as Windows Password Rescuer.
But you can just use it to recover your lost/forgot password.You also can use Windows Password Rescuer to add a new user with administrator privilege to your Windows without login. With this New user account you can logon your locked computer directly.
I also know a toolkit:[Daos Password Recovery Bundle 2012]. [Daos Password Recovery Bundle 2012] is an all-in-one password recovery software, which recover password for Windows, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, RAR/WinRAR, ZIP/WinZIP, PDF etc. Over 70+ types of passwords can be recovered instantly. http://www.daossoft.com/products/password-recovery-bundle.html
But the rainbow table sizes is an issue to keep people away.
Windows Password Breaker http://www.recoverwindowspassword.com/ is an available Windows password reset tool, which can easily remove Windows logon password within minutes.

The server side would do an MD5 hash of the password it has and then compare the two results. So no password would be sent. Can't say for sure though, and I don't know about the login page.
OK, so somebody used a program to hack a computer. This is unfortunately a norm in the world today. As long as we come up with better security, someone will come up with a better, faster way to hack it. There's really nothing we can do about it.
