jalopnik.com — Steve Saleen, the legendary Mustang tinkerer, is putting together 25 custom Mustangs for a cross-country road rally called "The Great American Run." The Mustangs will each be tuned to 600 hp, have a 0-60 time of under 4 seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph. The winner of the race will receive one and Saleen's already sold 11 to participants.

@FoxifiedNutjobThe Saleen Mustangs are made on the Mustang chassis. They get 6 cylinder Mustangs from Ford, then upgrade the suspension, a custom ground effects/body kit, and then replace the engine with a modified Ford V-8 engine. The engine compartment in the new Stang's is bigger than in my '95 GT, and there are plenty of the SN95's out there putting out more than 600 HP on modified Ford V-8s.

This doesn't change the fact that quite simply: Mustangs are bitch cars.Sure, you can make one fast. you can make *anything* fast. I know a guy that races his lawnmower.why? i dunno. he loves his lawnmower, and some people love their mustangs. But that doesn't make it smart.forget for a moment that a small, lightweight, specially-purposed import car *is* going to run away from one in the turns.I know this, say what you want, but if your a regular at any race track, and have more than passing amount of knowledge on the subject, you know it, too.Now forget about imports for a second. Looking from a purely muscle-car standpoint, mustangs don't handle well. and they don't pack the power potential that a small-block chevy does, they just don't. That's *why* you see so many small block chevy's at the track. You can build more power, cheaper, and arguably more reliably, with a small block. dollar for dollar, i will *always* take a small block over a ford...anything.because given dollar for dollar, the chevrolet will stomp you, every single time.

>> I honestly really feel sorry for people who buy a Ford these days!! It's like saying someone's gonna overclock an Intel Celeron and race that s**t!!While I agree most of ford's cars are complete s**t... taking a brand new Shelby Cobra or an 05-07 GT and turning it into a car that can drag race is VERY VERY simple. Much better than buying an import. If you're gonna race with turns, then yeah... grab an import or get a Z06 or Ford Gt..otherwise, drag racing... mustang or something with an LS7/2/1

Not even close. The fastest Mustang would be the P-51:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P51

the mustang is the only car that's profitable for ford, and it just barely pulls in a profit. Ford posts 12.7billion dollars in losses for 2006? that's right, billion.... with a "B"

Mustang won the 2005 Grand-Am ROAD RACING Championship. Yes, it can turn. This is one of the DUMBEST statements anyone can make. You don't push your car to its limits in your daily commute; so what if another car handles better than a Mustang? Are you a professional racer?
