@TheDatabit: I never lived in a dorm, but the ones I've seen have beat-up carpets. Presumably the area rug would be to hide unsightly stains and burns. I also read below that it helps protect the carpet in the dorm against stains and stuff, which is good because when you check out I think you have to pay for any new damage or stains.
