youtube.com — Montage of clips of the F-22 airshow demo including cobras, backflips, super-high-alpha flight, the Raptor hovering with its nose pointed straight up, some super-fast pitch-ups, and some "vapor" (sonic shock condensation cones and wingtip vortex contrails) at the very end. Sweet, sweet stuff.

I'm quite sure it takes more than 72 hours to change the paint job though :)

How does he? These things began production and were started to be paid for YEARS ago. It's not like we're suddenly funneling a lot of money into it now.

What, exactly, is that debt? Every war that the U.S. has fought in the last 60 years has been a war of aggression justified by some red herring like the "communist threat" or "Islamic terrorism". What has this done for the American people?

Exactly. Why are we blowing money on these?

"A suicide bomber is a poor man's airforce." I remember that from one of my history lectures.

you mean prototypes/experimentals were capable of doing thrust vectoring tricks along time ago. not quite the same as an unmodified random jet in an operational squadron/wing.

The problem is you can't predict who will be your enemy and your ally 20-40 years in the future. And also, since we're handing over our stealthy F-35 to our allies, we would want something to counter them if they were pointed in our direction by say, European Union? The two things that make the F-22 the ultimate ball buster is not its manuverability, but its stealth capability. In the dogfight with 8 F-15's, the F-15's could not get a radar lock, so that means it couldn't use its AA missles against it. Fighter battles today are very rarely done with visual sighting and "gun". It is also the only fighter capable of sustained supersonic cruise speed, which makes it the ultimate interceptor. Finally, the F-35 (which hasn't even been deployed yet) would not necessarily have the same edge against the Eurofighter, or advanced Soviet fighers. No, the REAL question is, can we AFFORD to have many wings of F-22's at approximately $137 million PER airplane.
