desktoplinux.com — The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has unveiled a new Linux distribution, free of the proprietary software contained in most Linuxes. gNewSense is based on Ubuntu and Debian, and offers users "the stability of Ubuntu with the addition of freedom."

If I just ignore the disputed licenses in Ubuntu and use it anyway isn't THAT the really free solution? Most of this stems from US patent abuses so there's no reason the rest of the world should skip a beat.

Great idea. Makes too much sense though. Won't happen until the ultimate fully functional distro is produced drawing the vast majority to it. Perhaps Ubuntu is the ONE and in 5 years we will all be running it.

RMS's/GNU's politics are right.....and could not be more timely with the release of HBO's documentary "Hacking Democracy" ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8367786376074634512&q=hacking+democracy&hl=en)Stallman, if he saw it, must have laughed as ordinary grandma turned activist preaches the evil of secrecy surrounding software. However, ideaology without producing good things that people want in the world is near useless. This is where the FSF falls short. They produce software that is a PITA, when people say something about it they tell them to do without, and then lecture them that they should sacrifice convenience for something politically correct, but behind other alternatives. Then they ask astonished and pissed when people use non -FSF stuff. If they want sacrifices for their cause (a worthy cause) they should sacrifice their pride and make their software appealing.

I predict that a year from now gNewSense will be another forgotten project.Lovely ideals, but as many have written, to make it usable for things most people want to do they have to go get all of that proprietary stuff themselves, so why bother with it?
