flac.sourceforge.net — FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. Grossly oversimplified, FLAC is similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio.

i archive my music in using Monkey's Audio . . . i prefer it to FLAC & Apple Lossless; i think it makes smaller files

seems like luke-- has no idea what he's talking about...the usenet community and archive.org and most others switched to FLAC a long time ago.

also, FLAC is actually free as in speech (open source, GPL) - so unlike monkey, etc you actually have the source and know whats going on. its also been tested much more rigorously.
