blogs.ign.com — With a PC game it’s a radically different process: unwrap the game, put in the disc, start clicking ok, figure out where to install it, make sure my DirectX version cuts the mustard, start watching the install progress, flip through the manual a bit, whip up a bologna sandwich, check on progress, start eating bologna sandwich, play the game – ..

@asian wasteyes most early games didn't need lengthy installations or installation at allthose were the good daysbutwhen more advanced games came out, the humble CD Drive even at 52X (7.8MB/sec) couldn't keep up with loading data so installation to the faster HDD (40 - 70MB/sec) is necessarynow that many people have DVD drives and 8 - 16x DVD drives are fairly fast (10 - 20MB/sec) though not as fast as the HDD but it is fast enough to run the game off the DVDThe PS2 DVD Drive was 4x, but PCs probably needed more speed for some reason, DirectX and Windows overhead?edit:hmm probably the reason why installation was necessary is also because of the different windows versions...

So I get some of the conveniences of a console... once during install. In exchange I get to pay at least 4x more for the hardware + upgrades, no vibration in most cases, no games fully optimized for my hardware because everyone has a different rig, viruses, spyware, BSOD and I have to play my games with photoshop controllers?SOLD!!!1!!!eleven!1!!

Which is a response to my favorite part of the article:"Do I need to keep the DVD in my drive to play? Once the game is fully installed you no longer need the DVD. This is also thanks to our new product activation technology."Looks like I will be buying Halo 2 after all. Getting a quality game without having to dick around with swapping discs or installing iffy cracked executables is worth the price of admission alone.
