desmogblog.com — Exxon Mobil Corp. has cut funding to groups raising questions about climate change from human-generated carbon dioxide, a move taken on the eve of its annual meeting in the face of criticism that the oil giant isn't as green as some of its rivals.

If it is true that Exxon is stopping funding these think-tanks , and it's a big IF, what does it mean? Is it a genuine change of heart? Are they becoming more secretive about funding? Or are they trying to eat their cake and have it? Conceding climate change in public, while secretly continuing to fund the denial industry. If ExxonMobil were really serious about climate change, we should expect ExxonMobil to be encouraging the Bush Administration and the Presidential hopefuls to introduce energy efficiency measures, better mileage for cars and other vehicles, and encourage renewable energy generation technologies. One would expect ExxonMobil to be lobbying the Presidential candidates about these matters. Furthermore, one would expect to be hearing about ExxonMobil's new renewable energy arm investing in solar, wind, tidal & etc., possibly in a joint-venture with GEC or a similar specialist partner. It mustn't be forgotten that the denial industry has been largely funded by Exxon since at least the late 1990s. Is the tiger going to change its stripes? We'll see. But actions speak louder than words, so let's see some action!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In the meantime, here is a small history of Exxon's denial industry, the think-tanks and some of the characters involved.Smoke, Mirrors & Hot Air - How ExxonMobil Uses Big Tobacco’s Tactics to Manufacture Uncertainty on Climate Sciencehttp://www.ucsusa.org/assets/documents/global_warm ... -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Common denialist arguments - debunkedCoby Beck's How to talk to Global Warming Skeptic http://gristmill.grist.org/skepticsNew Scientist: Climate Change: A guide for the perplexed http://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/ ...RealClimate: Response to common contrarian arguments http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004 ...NERC (UK): Climate change debate summary http://www.nerc.ac.uk/about/consult/debate/climate ...UK Met Office: Climate Change Myths http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/ ...Brian Angliss A Thorough Debunking http://scholarsandrogues.wordpress.com/2007/07/23/ ...John Cross Skeptical Science http://www.skepticalscience.com/
