If you want to protect your credit card, get one that allows you to use a temporary card number when making online purchases. My CC company (MBNA America) allows me to create a temp card number with a predefined spending limit and expiration date. If someone happens to intercept it, it won't do them any good, or me any harm.

Why not just create a separate login for surfing and make sure that user has no read/write permissions to important directories?

The CC criticism aside, I dugg the story for bringing up the fact that VMWare is now distributing a free runtime player that you can use without having to pay for Virtual PC. Sure, there are open-source options available, but it's nice to have another free, commercial option.
