I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, but this seems like the Russian government is being framed. Killing and injuring all these people who openly oppose Putin, days after a major appearance, in very obvious and spectacular ways. It's too easy to link back to Putin because of what the people are saying, way to easy, which is why Putin wouldn't do it. Even with (and possibly because of) his KGB background, I highly doubt he would bring all this heat down on himself by killing everyone who opposes him no matter where they are.Either way this'll make a good movie in a few years :P

Regarding the robbery angle, the story now is that the reports of his wallet and briefcase being stolen were false. I'm no fan of conspiracy theories, but I'm at least curious to hear the source of the false information.
