At the same time, I can see how little they've changed as well, and I've realized that the internet as we know it today is only a teenager, with many years of growth still ahead.

ICANN states on their website (google it) that domain names are not copyrightable. You can get in trouble for impersonating a company (e.g., phishing) but otherwise there is no entitlement when it comes to registering domain names; first come, first serve.
