arstechnica.com — A modular Windows 7 could mean many things: improved performance, increased security, and more customization. It also signals Microsoft's intent to start charging subscription rates for certain Windows features, too.

I agree, just because they're planning on making windows modular DOES NOT mean that they are going to charge subscription fees. That's a slippery slope fallacy. This is a great move for Microsoft. All the court cases they've had lately are a result of including extra things in windows, destroying competition.

He didn't actually make it up. What he wrote was actually used as an example use (in the patent application) of the "modular OS technology" that Microsoft patented last year.

Opinion is not the same as truth. However facts are. A lot of people on Digg like Windows but they fail to defend it with valid arguments (facts and sources). That is just plain lame, but that's just the way things are on the internet. -5 diggs only means 5 people disagree with me, or 10 agree and 15 disagree. I don't really care; I just want to make my point...

Not sure if this will actually happen. Especially the subscription bit. That's suicide.Microsoft is already facing a lot of stiff competition from Ubuntu and Apple. People can go either way now based on their preference. If they're stupid and just want trendy masturbation, Apple is more than willing to overcharge for slower systems. If they are practical and want a system that is efficient and safe, Ubuntu is always there waiting to be mailed to them for free.Microsoft represents the worst of everything.

If the software is written for Linux. What they used was a really fantastic system for bars and restaurants called Aloha. It may not look too pretty but it's the best POS system I've ever seen.http://www.hepos.com/software-table-and-bar.htm

No, no, no. Subscription operating systems are just a way for Microsoft to get a greedy stream of income from customers they consider "suckers". They envy companies like Blizzard which gets huge revenues from Online Role Playing Game subscriptions and they want that kind of revenue. No. I will continue to work with Linux and help improve it because Microsoft wants me to pay for an operating system every month where Microsoft through Core DRM can tell me what I can install or not.It is anti-competitive which is why Europe is suing MS. Stockholders should fire Steve!
