popsci.com — Think smoking is bad for you? Try just breathing. Louisiana scientists have discovered a group of previously undetected air pollutants that when inhaled exposes the average person to 300 times more free radicals than that of one cigarette in a day.

morbid, but nice

Actually that makes sense. Would you like somebody if you knew that they planned to set you on fire?

Guess I don't need to quit smoking then.

Ahh, digg, where differing views are espoused toward the acceptance of others, unless those views violently conflict with the values being promulgated by what remains of the fourth estate. It was a good poem, the people burying you are just as bad as the people who burn crosses. They'll probably bury me too.

I have asthma too. And it doesn't bother me. Just the only thing that really bothers me is how easily people are marketed their opinions, and how easily it is to coerce public agenda based upon scare tactics. Its been done for centuries, but we still can't shake the cycle. My goal wasn't to be insensitive. I just wish that people would be more critical towards agendas that they're bombarded with day after day. Conditioning is a real phenomenon, and everyone needs to understand the implications of such things.

The negative health effects of cigarettes just augment the real issue some people have with them. They smell worse than s**t and taint my clothes with their odor.

some people are allergic to perfume and cologne, others to even the slightest whiff of a cat or a dog. Some people have panic attacks in crowds, some can't walk as fast as everyone else on the sidewalk. In a civilized society, we deal with these differences by being polite ? we wash off perfumes, we put the dog outside, we give people space or a seat on the bus if they look like they need it, and we don't shove the elderly out of the way just because we are in a hurry. So why do cigarettes need to be legislated? In Toronto, smoking in huge, uncovered, outdoor bus stops is against the law. Why? When I smoke I don't shoulder my way to the middle of a crowd and start blowing rings, I move quietly to a corner. I'll hold my smoke up and away if I pass a baby on the street, not because I think it will hurt them but because I know new parents are protective and vigilant and I don't want to make them feel uncomfortable. The people who don't show these kinds of courtesies can be reprimanded by society's attitude towards them, the same as people who blast music in public or stumble around piss drunk on the street. I'm not saying there arent potential problems with cigarettes, simply that they don't need to be separately demonized as if they are some kind of penultimate evil that trumps all the other things people do that affect those around them.

or I'll gladly stand somewhere else -- like a few feet away where I'm not blowing any in their face.Oh wait, everyone thinks that you create a deadly cancer bubble for miles around you when you smoke. Junk science strikes again.

Based on his attitude and my past experience, my guess is that damian lost someone close to him to a smoking-related illness, and for that my heart goes out to him. But damian, it is a shame that you let it fill you with blind rage. Do you think it accomplishes anything? You have made it quite clear that you consider us, as smokers, to be despicable and subhuman, so why should we care what you think about our behaviour?Oh, and nobody said that cyanide is okay for you. Nobody was even trying to make you look stupid – that would be like trying to make the sky look blue.
