niallkennedy.com — "Think of a name, any name, and it's probably already registered as a .com domain. Most sites blocking your path to a memorable and descriptive names are owned by domain squatters, businesses buying domain names in bulk and running targeted advertisements from Google and Yahoo!."

I was very surprised that I managed to buy internetmad.com.It was a few years ago but still, it seems like something somebody should have thought of.

I share my first and last name with a well known computer industry executive, so all the possible domain names are taken. I figure if I need to setup a website, I'll have to use an anagram of my name.

In the case of .com and .co.* domains, perhaps it's time for the relevant authority to proscribe the practise of squatting on domains that are clearly trademarks, especially when it's a clear case of squatting for ransom. For example, if I set up an organisation and go to the effort and expense of having its name legally recognised as a trademark, I should be able to compel the naming authorities to transfer a squatter's ownership at the prevailing market cost. This is a really annoying state of affairs and something will have to be done soon.

Yeah, they've taken my legal name and are squatting on tiffanytoland.com, and redirecting my clients, collectors and fans to jewelry rather than my artwork. :(

There are still a few good domains left, you just have to be willing to look for a long time, or use a tool like http://www.bustaname.com/

I challenge you to invent a name that is pronounceable, catchy and (possibly) relevant but not keyword-based and not yet taken. I'm currently trying to name an application I'm working on and so far the squatters have beaten me to 4 user-tested, well-thought names. One of them I would have had if the name only occurred to me 2 days earlier!f**k these people.

We're using http://www.jobaba.com which we thought was pretty pronounceable.I also own http://www.greennode.com which I'm letting expire at the end of this month (if you want that, let me know and I'll transfer it for free to anyone who isn't a lame squatter).
