And yes, "island" is just a metaphor ;)Carnivores will relish and revel in this post - vegans, definitely not. Either way, I welcome your thoughts on the debate. Any McDougallites out there?
Mark, alas, I wish I liked meat...it's just so disgusting. Costa Rica sounds lovely though. It's hard for me to get as much protein as I would like; handfuls of nuts sure have a lot of calories. What do you think they should have offered at the buffets?
I'm a vegan, and this even sounded unhealthy to me. I'd like to see his research. For starters, they should have had lots and lots of healthy (not overly cooked) veggies--it doesn't sound like they were there. And why is he against supplements? You shouldn't rely on them, but they can and should be a part of any healthy diet--vegan or otherwise. FYI runnermom: The USDA says we get too much protein. You can get plenty without going overboard on the nuts. Just makes sure you eat a well-rounded diet. If you're vegan, follow the vegan four food groups: http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vsk/food_groups.htmlYou can be healthy on a vegan or an omnivore diet. People will argue that, ultimately, one or the other is far healthier, and there's plenty of research to suggest veganism can be healthier. But I'd encourage anyone to do lots of research before reaching any conclusions, and to certainly not blindly follow one individual's dietary plan without reading up on all of the research and arguments (both for and against). And *please* don't believe that McDougall represents the vegan "community."
