Yes, "it takes a tough man to make a tender chicken" is from the old Perdue Farms commercials. If you are from the NE, you know them by heart. So, that was the first play on words, and then he wanted to say "keep plucking that chicken" but he Freudian slipped big time. 8)
"keep plucking that chicken" is a timeworn phrase. He meant to use that, since it's correct for the moment. But, Freudian slips are a biyatch. 8)
