Long live capitalism, FSF is becoming far too socialist for me.

"Yes, free software is generally less expensive than software you have to pay for. Thanks for pointing that out."Jamangold: you've fallen into the Free-Beer-Fallacy. :-D The Free Software Foundation uses the word "free" with the same meaning as when we say "free speech", not "free beer".As for cost, you *do* have to pay for "Free Software", even if you receive the software "for free", there are support and training costs. And do you think Dell is pre-installing Ubuntu out of the kindness of their hearts? No, they're charging you for the labor.Personally, I think Free Software advocates should try to avoid cost comparisons, because it causes too much confusion. They should just stick with a statement like, "Even if Free Software was more expensive, and even if it had less features, the freedom would still be worth the extra money and sacrifice."--b9

Have you ever tried WINE (the Windows emulator)? Support for programs in WINE gets better with every new release. My current favorite is Sam 2007 which is based on PCLinux2007, has WINE included, and is on a Live CD.

This story is right on.Free-software rocks! To hell with Vista!

It is FUD, the most important thing to take from Peter Gutmann's analysis is his own admission that he never actually put Vista to the test to see if any of his claims actually pan out in the real world.

Because all the older hardware that I would prefer to use, runs Vista just fine. The claim that Vista is responsible for "thousands and thousands of electronic garbage around the world " is BS; those systems were running an OS before Vista came along that many people are still happy with (XP). And for the ones that were in a position to upgrade, I'd bet more excess hardware gets traded down to even older systems than is being thrown away these days.

Haven't seen any examples of DRM security which doesn't impact on consumers rights to "fair use". Also I've noticed the DRM technologies in use are easily broken, some very shortly after its first release. DRM or "Digital Rights Management" or better still "Digital Restrictions Management" doesn't appear to me as being designed for consumer friendliness or respect. The big companies in the entertainment industry see their rights differently from Laws in most countries. DRM puts unfair and wrongful restrictions on people worldwide regardless of local laws.DRM also restricts distribution options for independent content creators. Don't be fooled by DRM being used for security, if you're an average consumer who uses a computer to play their digital media then DRM has an opposite effect to your personal security and actually allows third parties access to your personal information and gives them control over how your computer functions. If my personal information is leaked and my computer can be controlled by a third party then I would say I've been hacked and my security has been penetrated, I know longer feel in control and safe.

Vista adoption hasn't been that strong and the ones who did go out and buy a computer with Vista may have been looking to upgrade anyways and possibly handed down the older computer to someone else. Vista DRM may increase power usage but by how much, would there be any significant environmental impact? I'm not so sure.I'm all for consumer choices, rights and privacy, so up until I heard Vista would use DRM to take that away from me I was looking forward to it's release.DRM is not for me so Vista doesn't fit my needs but other people don't care for those things I just mentioned, so let em have Vista. As for me I'm thankful for the choices free software has given me. I now use Linux, it fits my needs, plus I use many other FOSS products because of the freedom given to me by licenses such as the GNU/GPL. I don't have any trust in MS any more, DRM is unfair to consumers so I can't recommend Vista to anyone but in saying that, I wouldn't use the environmental impact as an argument to not use Vista. Consumers do need to be warned of the restrictive nature of DRM and it's neglect to your privacy so they can make an informed decision before buying Vista but using the environment as an argument is not IMHO the way to go.Supported Ms for 12 years but no longer can.I support FOSS and a cleaner environment but i'm not convinced i should support this.
