Having seen the more recent technology used in making a modern bullet proof vest, I would have to say that the guy in the photo suffered severe blunt force trauma. The main principle behind the use of a vest is to stop the bullet from penetrating the skin and damaging internal organs. Even if successful, there would still be a blunt force impact that will push inward into the body resulting in various injuries from something such as bruising all the way to organ damage and/or broken bones depending on the exact threat level of the vest and the caliber of weapon used. The addition of metal and ceramic plates help to prevent the blunt force impact. In any event, this guy was either rather confident or crazier then a loon. All in all. Give me a few broken ribs and such. It is a small price to pay to make it home to see your family.
