Maybe never.Prototypes and breakthrough devices usually tend to get shelved until some mega-corporation can fund further development and perhaps market them in reduced form and functionality at a later time.

IBm had a massive 350 lb monster 1GB drive that was large enough that you needed a pallet-lifter to transport it around.A picture from 2006 was shown on Digg not too long ago, comparing the old drive to an SD card.
