slate.com— It may seem curious that feminism has made inroads on many retrograde customs—name-changing, for example—but not on the practice of giving engagement rings.

The tradition thing behind the ring, and how it got ingrained into all of us is really wierd. I pride myself on being non traditional, but the engagement ring was something I caved on. For 5 years i wore a promise ring from my boyfriend, a simple white gold ring with my birthstone. I loved it, still do, and i wear it on my right hand now. But I caved to tradition and said I wanted the diamond engagement ring. The idea of doing a non-traditional ring or no ring was kind of scary cause I thought my parents would be disappointed or that they would look down on my boyfriend as a "deadbeat" he couldn't afford a ring and all sorts of pitty 'aww you didn't get a diamond' from friends even if I insisted that I wanted it that way. We live in a world with certain expectations and sometimes it's hard to break the mold of those.
Random aside: The Roman tradition that the article mentions had rings that were styled after the collars slaves wore to market. The symbolism was pretty overt, especially in the parts of the empire where husbands had to pay a bride price. (I suspect I have to cite a source for any assertion this ridiculous.) You could have taken your first clue from the fact that it was entirely unreasonable even if you assumed it was being written by a complete moron. Or, you could have gone by the little emoticon at the end of line that apparently makes people get a little gassy or something. It's so frikkin obvious that it's a fakepost, it's difficult to comprehend it being percieved any differently.Maybe I didn't use "roflmao" or random leetspeak enough. Damn, I'm losing my touch.
I didn't want a ring - I totally think it's a huge waste of money and very materialistic. But my fiance really wanted me to have one -- young guy, old heart. I had my first girls night out since being engaged and instead of getting picked up - I heard, "Didn't you see her huge rock on her finger?" (It's not huge by the way - it's a marquise - so it looks bigger) It was nice to hear and my fiance liked hearing about it when I got home. It is an odd feeling to be marked not single - though. I'm not a cheat by any means, but I miss the attention now. This is going to take some getting used it.
feminism as the new marginal tradition is relatively new a few decades and the custom of making an engagement ring as the central gift of the entire engagement ceremony remains to be alive and vibrant for almost as long as Christianity tradition. Feminism might go out of fashion or become a part of the main stream long before engagement ring will loose its fashion
