techcrunch.com — Encyclopedia Britannica is used in often case studies as a definitive example of how new technology can disrupt a business. Everything was great for the nearly 250 year old privately held company until the Internet came around and category five hurricaned on their parade.

We always had world book. I'm guessing it was cheaper. Had to have been a 60's edition with its gold and green bindings.

It is not only too late but it's a bad idea to begin with. I mean I have a blog and even though I fit the description of "web publisher" I would not use their services because it's just too much hassle. Despite what people say wikipedia is pretty accurate. I would never use it on a research paper but for alll other things it's fine.

Thats pretty interesting. They've been around for a long ass time. I hope I get approved for the program. They do have more authority (vs Wikipedia). If they decide to open up to the public & to search engines I'm sure Wikipedia will be in for troubles. Encyclopedia Britannica is a very widely known and trustworthy brand. They have 250 years behind them vs Wikipedia's (under 10 years?).I'm going to check it out - but can't imagine them not changing their business model and opening up to the public (some time in the next few years).

They sent me a 1 year free trial. I do think it's too little too late though. Even in the naming of the site they blog with it's very evident they're out of touch with how the web works - thinking it's eb... something another. They purchase a domain name that is easy to remember. They should make it completely open and free. Then hire Zeldman to style it. His work with WP is awesome.
