divinecaroline.com — What we think of as gross is a defense mechanism—the sticky substance protects sensitive skin within the canal from invading dirt, dead skin, and other things that could cause problems. They get stuck on the wax instead of burrowing further into the ear.

Parents removed wax from my ear as a kid with bobby pins all the time.. I thought it was normal. I actually thought that was the primary use for them for the longest time. You use the round end to carry the wax out, never once had a problem with it.

I've never done it, but there are some things on that website that really make no sense. The user 'testimonials' are hilarious and I'm sorry to sound unappreciative for linking to it, because it's great amusement, but not really that good of examples of people who have done it. Seriously, those people are fools.I would do it under the supervision of a friend's mother, if I did.

what 'testimonials'? most of it relates the results of experiments and studies conducted by real doctors:"Since wax is sticky, the negative pressure needed to pull wax from the canal would have to be so powerful that it would rupture the eardrum in the process. However, candling produces no vacuum. Researchers who measured the pressure during candling of ear models found that no negative pressure was created. The same investigators candled eight ears and found that no ear wax was removed and candle wax was actually deposited in some of them! it's quicker if you stick gasoline soaked cotton balls in your ears and set them on fire

Either way an interesting article that brings it up again to what is Ear Wax for, why we need it. It's all about the balance. Clean what you don't need, let the body do the rest. InfiniteNothing: The Ear bud and Ear Plug thing is probably because it doesn't invade the ear as far as a Q-Tip does. Normally you get into the Outer Ear Hole and start cleaning the wax from that area, whereas the plug only goes right before that hole.
