pbs.org — Henry Jenkins, a professor at MIT and the director of comparative studies there, has written an essay that debunks eight popular myths about videogames. These include "Girls don't play videogames," "videogames make kids violent," and "videogames aren't a meaningful form of expression."

-Girl gamer raises hand-I would buy a 360, but I'm smarter than that. ;) Seriously though, I started being a PC gamer a long time ago, but before that I even had a Sega Saturn and all of that s**t.-------------------------http://fuh-q.com

Jenkins is a first rate academic and thinker. In the interview he did with me he taled about a study he did at MIT this year. 100 percent of MIT freshmen are gamers, yup, all of them.

**Girls do play video games** I've been playing since Super NES and have been pretty hard core about it. I even kick some guys asses playing Halo every now and again. I was even excited about the 360! I think they should research the issue of whether or not guys who play video games have healthy social interactions with girls...

@MasherSCF - its a little more than disturbing the amount of mistrust people that spend little to no time educating themselves have in people who are educated. So many people assume that just because they don't understand something it means that nobody can. Thus it is a mystery only to be explained by people who can spread myths and conspiracies. I haven't seen this article before, and I'm very glad that there were sources cited for his information. I digg it.

Finally someone who talks sense. I've been playing video games since I was 5, including all the gore-fests like DooM, GTA, Postal 2 etc. and I still cry during films and have never hit a person with the intention of injuring them since I was in high school about 8 years ago. If anything violent games help me vent my angst and make me less stressed and angry when I get annoyed with something or someone. If I could dig this twice I would...++digg

Probably discussed to death and mentioned on digg often enough, but:"Everything Bad Is Good For You" by Steven Johnson... does a pretty good job debunking pop myths about videogames. From the author of "Emergence" (also excellent)
