engadget.com— I live in an area with half a bar of AT&T coverage and 5 full bars of Verizon EV-DO Rev.A... Build your damn network AT&T!

I never once had a problem when I had Cingular, but once they merged with AT&T and they started doing "upgrades" to the network in the St. Louis area, my calls started screwing up.
They may, but they're not mandatory. You can "buy" a 1-year contract (Usually an extra $100 with AT&T), or just get the phone outright with no contract. Can't blame a company for having contracts just because you can't afford the full-price phone.
verizon's network in my opinion is superior to all(and im not a verizon customer)I give cell companies the "elevator test". Anytime you see someone on an elevator talking you have to ask what service they have because your service never gives you elevator calls.
I have T-Mobile. It sucks here in Santa Cruz. It's not just that the reception is bad, it's also that their phones always claim to have 3-4 bars here, and can't make or accept a call 80% of the time in places. Why is an accurate measure of signal/noise too difficult for them?
Actually, I wasn't blaming the contract for anything. I just said they suck. The fact that I'm stuck in a contract has nothing to do with the fact that their service sucks and that anyone who currently wants to own an iPhone is stuck with s**tty service. Hey, but thanks for the awesome reply ;)

That's not true. Verizon and Sprint offer a bunch of phones that work worldwide:<a class="user" href="http://www.verizonwireless.com:80/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&amp;action=viewPhonesByFeatures&amp;capId=85&amp;deviceType=Phones&amp;sortOption=priceSort&amp;lid=//global//phones+and+accessories//global+ready+devices" rel="nofollow">http://www.verizonwireless.com:80/b2c/store/contro ...</a><a class="user" href="http://nextelonline.nextel.com/en/stores/intl_phones/international_phones.html" rel="nofollow">http://nextelonline.nextel.com/en/stores/intl_phon ...</a>
