news.bbc.co.uk — British band Duran Duran are to create a virtual island within online game Second Life, on which they will perform actual live concerts. Second Life is an online 3D digital world, which is imagined, created and owned by the residents. Are virtual celeb appearances the next big thing online? I want to battle celebs in BF2! :)=)

I have to agree. And sorry to all the Duran Duran fans... But "Hungry Like the Wolf" is on my list of the top 10 most annoying and lame songs of all time.

It's actually an interesting idea. Virtual concerts might not be that great of an idea, but like I said, gaming with celebs would be fun. Or virtual chats, or something else that can't be duplicated in the real world.

SL isn't a Role Playing Game for the simple reason that it isn't a game. There is no goal and no way to 'win' or 'lose'. No advancement in rank either. It is an online community where you can create objects (anything from small toys to skyscrapers) and script behaviors for them. Customize your avatar on the fly by changing the shape of your body and face, creating clothes, or wearing the aforementioned objects on any of a few dozen points on your virtual body -- the implications of which can be mind-boggling.

Kind of like 'Mister Mister' and 'The The'10 points to anyone under the age of 25 who gets THOSE references!

You know, there's burying for inaccuracy for the sake of accuracy, and then there is burying for the sake of just being a dick, and if you're burying something with 700 diggs because of you have a difference of opinion about the definition of what an RPG is and then announcing it, I think it's pretty easy to guess which of these causes is motivating you.

The second life experience is important in entertainment becuase of the presence of others. Watching a streaming video on your own you get no sense for who is around you and a general audience buzz. Go to a concert in SL, and you get to react to the band and the crowd. Its not as good as real life, but loads better than a soulless pop videoEvents, and presence combined with a contribution minded set of users elevate these metaverse technologies to a more involvening and interesting level. It has hit a tipping point with second life, due to teh meeting of many things on teh adoption curve, broadband, web as a platform, generations of gamers, powerful laptop and home machines, a willigness to spend money over the web, the user defined contribution wikipedia effect. Its not all perfect, but try a meeting in SL, or attend an event. You will see what I mean. Its also definitely not a game, just like a website/blog etc is not a game. As a gamer it does not hit my gaming gene.

Art imitates life, life imitates art.Personally I think this is great. You have got to love bands that try out new stuff.André HedetoftMovie-geekBlogging about geek porn over at http://www.andrehedetoft.com

The idea of Second Life itself is really a very scary concept. How is this going to have an effect on its users psychologically? I think that, after seeing a documentary about this technology, there may be grave and dangerous effects from playing this game. Users may become so enveloped by this environment, that real life won't mean anything to them. Besides, what is wrong with real life? If we decide that this is a more pleasing thing, what kind of life is it to spend every waking moment plugged in? Duran should be severely criticized for this irresponsible business move. Please research Second Life before giving over your own life.
