I agree No Child Left Behind is junk. And test scores don't really mean anything except how well people score on tests. But the assertion that test scores have been falling for 40 years is incorrect. He links to another one of his screeds to indicate it, and even that screen undercuts it by saying that yes, test scores are up, but that test scores don't mean anything.Buried as inaccurate.

Well, creationism isn't taught in schools and yet students scores have been falling for 40 years.Buried comment for attempt to deflect attention to something irrelevant.

I blamed it on grade inflation. I think more students need to fail. Back in the good ole days I bet the dropout rates were higher. Get rid of the retards and the overall performance of students should improve.<a class="user" href="http://www.epinet.org/content.cfm/webfeat_lessons20011205">http://www.epinet.org/content.cfm/webfeat_lessons20011205</a>

Scores going down? Immigration from third world countries going up while the middle class is being kicked to the curb?Any questions? The Great Education Myth is architected by corporate ceos who can't get enough cheap foreign labor. See Bill Gates Can't Get Enough Burnt Fries<a class="user" href="http://tootruthy.blogspot.com/2007/03/bill-gates-cant-get-enough-burnt-fries.html">http://tootruthy.blogspot.com/2007/03/bill-gates-cant-get-enough-burnt-fries.html</a>By opening up the flood gates to an "infinite" number of immigrants with h1b visas, corporate America wins by driving down wages while the middle class - which has been shrinking over the past 40 years due to families not being able to afford 4+ kids -- provides them with a statistic which means nothing more than this: Corporate America is creating a have/have not society and is using "Education" as another excuse to drive down wages. This country must first realign its education policies and best practices employment oversight standards with regulated immigration policy to once attain superior competitive status as a strong, educated nation.<a class="user" href="http://www.davidsirota.com/2006/03/fortune-magazine-on-great-education.html">http://www.davidsirota.com/2006/03/fortune-magazine-on-great-education.html</a>

Anyone who thinks that way is eat up with the dumbass. Unfortunately, most kids think this way. It takes a village. Know what I mean?

Actuallyits omglinuxwoah... what an ironic misspelling...and if you don't think Japan is killing us in education, especially in science and engineering ( where they have the most per capita in the world) then you probably derive your information from something more kawaii and pinku than factual.

Indeed.Bitter taste in my mouth, though.

@THX1212Fine, maybe you're correct and studies show education, among other things tops out in the third generation (and not the second). I was speaking somewhat flippantly but your fact doesn't really undermine my theory. I also happen to think Mexicans do fit into the theory I advocate. They do, in general, underperform in our society. But, the key is they have a significantly lower barrier to entry than most other immigrants from other countries. Mexicans can more or less just walk across our border and choose to settle in communities that are, for all intents and purposes, no different than one in Mexico. Thus, you aren't necessarily just selecting the most driven people a country has to offer.European and Asian immigrants among others have traditionally had a substantially more difficult time getting to America, particularly years ago when airplanes were not available. Thus, barriers to entry were many times higher and again, only the most driven landed on our shores. Furthermore, years ago they pretty much severed their ties with their home countries because of the distance. So, if you were say an Irish guy packing up your suitcase to go to America, you said your goodbyes to your friends and family and you knew that you might never see or speak to them again. You really had to have a lot of guts to do this. I think about my grandparents and what they did and I realize that I could never have the courage to do what they did.Mexican immigrants, on the other hand, can settle in Southern California or Texas, for instance, and easily stay in touch or fairly easily travel back and forth between the two countries. Thus, there's not as much of a sacrifice. Because of that and the relatively lower barriers to entry, I think there is a broader spectrum of people that come from Mexico.

Teaching isn't why America is dumbing down. Learning is. When half the population thinks the world is 6,000 years old despite all evidence to the contrary, shows me there are just too many Americans who just don't like to think, let alone learn.

Material is harder now than in 1967. You can't say that kids are getting dumber. I'm a B-C student and it seems like I know more about everything than my parents, save for taxes and fiscal responsibility.

Government needs a populace just smart enough to do the basics such as eat, procreate, and watch American Idol. Anything else needs to be weeded out so the people don't question what goes on in Washington DC.Also, the money thrown at education seems to be inverse proportional to the results.

Literate state is worth wealth owned. To increase literacy and to produce a well educated state, younger generation should be taught about the importance of education.<a class="user" href="http://test-help.org/praxisii.htm">http://test-help.org/praxisii.htm</a>
