valleywag.com — 365 Main, a datacenter on the edge of San Francisco's Financial District, is popular with Soma startups for its proximity and its state-of-the-art facilities. The non-starting generators issue happened a a colo near ours a few months back. First the main power went out, the UPSes kicked in and then only two of three gennys started, due to a leak in the pneumatic starting system. UPSes eventually ran out of juice, and the two remaining generators couldn't take the load, so they died too, bringing the place to a standstill.

Reminds me of the time I was trying to fix a door switch on a reach-in at this restaurant I worked at in the North Bay.....uh...with the power connected & on, (I know, stupid). Anyways, a loose wire got away from me & shorted out on the frame blowing sparks everywhere....at that very instant the lights in the kitchen went out. Nobody saw what I did, so I thought I could sneak over & reset the circuit breaker, which I did, but nothing happened. Baffled, I went out into the mall & the whole shopping mall was was dead & dark. I thought, "Oh oh, I really f**ked up bad this time". Then I went out into parking lot & saw that all the other buildings & traffic lights were out too. By this time I am dumbfounded at how a simple short circuit in the kitchen could knock out power to an entire shopping center. The boss let me off early so I skedaddled on home, marveling at the luck of not getting caught at my mistake. It wasn't until hours later as I was watching the news on TV that I learned that the one of the towers supporting wires on the Pacific Intertie power line blew down in a wind storm knocking out power to large sections of Northern California.I was never happier to hear about a major power failure in my whole life, man.
