First, someone who probably thought it an interesting read, submitted the story. Then enough users (i.e. people who have "signed up" on the digg.com website) agreed that it was a good read (possibly without considering the old date), and clicked on the text "digg it" which can usually be found in the upper left part of the page. When enough users "digg" a story, it will be displayed on the front page.

either theres some secret humor im missing, or that article needs to be seriously rewritten. writing to files in kernel space is bad... so why the tutorial?
