news.yahoo.com— Drivers Licenses will soon become more expensive as states must implement changes to meet new REAL ID requirements, including including biometric identification (fingerprint, retinal scan, etc.).

Lots of quotes from lawmakers in that article. If they're so unhappy about it why didn't they raise these concerns BEFORE it passed when they were debating it...
My DMV has lines already that stretch out the door, and they already do retinal scans and thumbprints. They don't out that info on the ID's, but they have them in their computers.
Any time you change something like that it is going to cost a lot at first. In CA we already get our thumbprint taken and we have a magnetic strip on the back of our license. I have no idea what is stored on it but I bet you it isn't any more than what would be on the new licenses. Thre just aren't many good arguments against this. The biggest problem is cost.
This isn't good, government has shown us many times it will abuse whatever power we give them. This "War on terror" is letting them get away with all kinds of crap they wouldn't otherwise be able to. The govt is supposed to work for us, not the other way around. @jackington: What most people are worried about is the so-called "contactless" RFID cards. See here for the real vulnerabilities of this particular flavor of RFID: http://www.rfidanalysis.org/
