redorbit.com — The drive-in movie theater is making a muted comeback in the United States. Why? It's a smokers' and drinkers' paradise where pajama-clad children and crying babies are welcome. While its not a return to the heyday of the 1950s (there were more than 4,000 outdoor theaters in the US), 20 new drive-in cinemas have opened up in the last year.

it's $8 per car in Fayetteville, AR and a great deal. when you have young kids (like me) it's the perfect place to see the new movie that you can't get away long enough to catch without the kids. you can load the kids up with coloring books and a flashlight and they have a blast in the back of the ole SUV while the wife and I have complete control of the volume! kids too loud? turn it up! hungry? bring your own snacks in a cooler! legs cramped? scoot the seat back a bit! too hot or too cold? adjust it!... anyway, you get the idea! oh yeah... NO STICKY FLOOR!

I miss the drive in where I used to live. $6 per person for two shows, decent quality FM broadcast, bring your own food/drinks, sitting in my comfortable seats, no whining kids, no annoying cell phones. They play fairly recent movies too. I just checked and they're playing Pirates 2 and Cars right now.

I have fond memories of going to Drive-ins in South Africa as a kid.... but they didnt have TV Then!!! something to do with Black and white! I'm in Ireland now and the best park to see a movie is in Dublin Rush Hour Traffic!

"Movie-goers can take their own food and drink -- they don't have to sneak it in." This is why the dirve in is making a comback. Why pay 3.50 for a box of candy when you could bring any food you want.

For anyone not sure if they are close to one. This is a pretty good list.http://www.driveinmovie.com/mainmenu.htm

@TEXNo....Not really police state at all. They know drunk people come outta there in their cars, so they watch for them. Same idea as a speed trap. No police state.Hell if you're worried about getting caught, drive SLOWLY and don't weave. Even a BAC of .20 won't get you pulled over if you drive decent enough lol

There's one in CT that I know of that we love to go to. It's called the Mansfield Drive-In.

Horray! I love to hear that it is coming back. As a family of 5, going to the theatre requires a second mortgage and an additional equity loan for admission and snacks. Bring it on!!
