I don't know where you're interviewing at, but as a professional code monkey I have never seen a place put more importance on what IDE you used over how well you actually knew the language. While I am not saying it's for everyday use, if you can't code a web site/program/anything involving writing source code in a plain text editor (notepad, vi, etc.), you have no place calling yourself a developer.

can someone tell me without digging around eclipse's convoluted website on my own...does their IDE run in clunky java, too?

Everybody quit wining and look at the version - 0.31. That means that it is unfinished. Shoot, it even says "beta" on the website. Personally I'm pumped to see something like this in the works.Bad title, but still dugg

I'm a big fan of text editors for webdev, and I shied away from Dreamweaver, because I saw it as too much of a WYSIWYG editor, which gave me less control over the actual code (perhaps not a 100% true assessment, but whatever).I am a HUGE fan of Aptana, because it augments the text editor in all the ways I want. Automatic code completion (including image paths, and CSS IDs), line numbers and collapsible tags, easy one click preview in a browser (or two-click preview in any browser), code outline, and easy insert of "snippets" like Doctypes, style links and the like.Check it out...

Aptana also seems to work GREAT with CFEclipse for ColdFusion.. Eclipse + Aptana + PHPEclipse + CFEclipse + SQL Explorer + Subversion (+ Flex Builder?.. i'll keep the stand alone for now) = :) ..heck what else do you need?
filmprogApr 23, 2007
The latest download for Aptana has full Ruby support *and* Rails support! I guess it's the Dreamweaver and PHP killer.

So... Rubbish. I'd better go and drink some vodka

Not so useful, but... This makes me smile.

Actually PHP support in Aptana would be kind of useless since the PDT is already available and has a thorough interactive debugger.

One small rectification: Aptana is *not* open-source. The license does not allow redistributing it, or redistributing "any derivative work of the Program", which means that no other open-source project can take advantage of it. See the license file ( <a class="user" href="http://www.aptana.com/legal/apl/">http://www.aptana.com/legal/apl/</a> ):"THIS LICENSE GRANTS PERMISSIONS ONLY FOR YOUR INTERNAL USE (AS DEFINED BELOW). IF YOU WISH TO DISTRIBUTE OR MAKE OTHER USES OF THE PROGRAM, PLEASE CONTACT APTANA."Redistribution is the #1 rule of opensource, see the OSS definition at <a class="user" href="http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php">http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php</a> for example. You will notice that they don't use the words "open source" anywhere on their site, because they know that it's not. Instead, they use "source open". Basically, it's just like freeware: you can use but you can't touch. :(

It's a killer for me; I prefer to hand code my websites.

Buried. I had to register and there is no DL link.Should have known it was a scam as soon as they were selling a PRO version.
