freewebs.com— Free program that lets you drag and drop your Windows taskbar buttons to re-order them! No extra hotkey or lame extra steps, just drag 'n drop... sooo useful.

1) consider doing an option such that its a standalone program, no installation needed.2) consider not putting it as a background or service, but only when I need it (ie, i will start the program myself, arrange the taskbar, and then close)customization is key :)
I use a cooool utility that allows me to hide and show the apps and also maintain their order on the taskbar, other than drag n drop buttons on taskbar. I can save the order of buttons to a file and save many such orders. Check it out at:http://www.askarya.com/tm/tm.aspBut its not free...
To answer my own question after searching for 40 minutes: No, there does not appear to be a utility that allows me to change the icon on a taskbar button. However, I did find a utility that allows me to minimize any application to the system tray and customize the icon that is used in the system tray (4t Tray Minimizer Free) (http://www.4t-niagara.com/tray.html).E.g., for Google Calendar, I configured it to be a "Favorite Application" and identified by "Google Calendar" as the window title. Then I specified a calendar icon to use when minimized to tray. It works! But it is a little confusing that, when not minimized, it uses the regular Firefox icon in the taskbar. Hopefully this can be remedied in the next version.

Way ahead of you; I just find the never ending amount of that garbage on the net exceedingly annoying.

If you right click the icon in the task tray, then go to options you can choose to hide the icon :-)

Taskbar Button Manager is another free utility which allows changing the order of the taskbar buttons: http://www.innovative-sol.com/taskbar-button-managerI prefer this because the UI is much better - you drag and drop the buttons and a nice bubble appears above the taskbar, showing you where the button will move if you release the mouse.

New version of JetStart http://www.codesector.com/jetstart.asp now supports taskbar buttons drag and drop. Also JetStart Toolbar can now be activated by holding both mouse buttons, so you can turn off it's tray icon.
