@mikey Artists getting a day job and actually producing something physical as oppose to virtual means of entertaining the rest? Somehow I don't find that threatening at all. I'm a musician. I have a day job. I don't make any money with my music and I believe it's better that way. My art is not influenced by greed and desire for fame. I play in order to relax or to entertain my guests, to train my brain and hearing, to attract a girl or to make a colleague jealous of my skill. Art is a way of self-expression. Sure, would've been wonderful if I could make a living of it, but if there is no demand, I'm not going to be catching people in the street or playing in their faces like a restaurant band member. I'm not going to force anyone to pay if they're not willing to pay. I am not going to produce art for middle man's profits and if I want investments into my music career, I'll work long hours at my day job to buy a new instrument. I am not producing anything physical when I play. I entertain people with sounds of music. If they like it, they can pay be back with applause. Sound for sound. Enough payment for me. Music, movies and games - they are fun, but they are not essential. They are addictive at best, but they're completely virtual. They cannot be compared to physical goods and should not be treated the same way. Once again, when someone steals an apple from a store, the seller cannot sell the apple that vanished. In digital world the object is always there for the person willing to pay for it. Duplication does not prevent further distribution. The item can still be sold. Intellectual property laws have a downside. They allow bankers of the human mind to acquire rights to revolutionary ideas people have no way of marketing due to restraints put up by the licensing and patent laws. The big company then holds the right in order to prevent implementation. Intellectual property prevents 2 people from using the same method even if they arrived at it independently. It interferes with the progress by wrapping it with layers of bureaucracy. I believe it to be the reason we still don't have efficient alternatives to oil markets, cures for aids and cancer or cheap drugs in general. Intellectual property allows people to hold onto ideas from which the society would greatly benefit.
This argument is especially fud.Proof? Lets see someone accused of downloading kiddy porn use this excuse... it won't work. IIRC someone actually did. Didn't matter. The key word here is "intent".
jondee,"Is Digg.com not an American website?"No, it's an international site. its server may be located in the USA, but it has an international audience. Just because everyone writes in english doesn't make it "exclusively" american."You're right I am arrogant and crass, I'm an American, that's what we do. Do you really think that Americans care what other countries think about us? If we did, don't you think we would do something to improve our worldly relations?" thanks for reinforcing the prejudice.
OK, say I have a song on my hard drive. Now when I listen to that song on my computer isn't the song being copied into RAM memory? so wouldn't that mean I now technically have two copies on my computer. I can't come to a good decision on any of this Music/Movie downloading, I will forever be on the fence.
To Tell you the truth. It always seems that us the little people, always gets blamed for all that we do. yes getting music for free is illegal, but the the government doesn't give a damn about you. throwing you away will benefit extra money they can flash around. its all one big f**king scam to make them richer and you poorer. This is the present/future. it is what it is. the Internet was supposed to be for the people by the people. Look at the Internet like everyday society. the computer is like our world only in a tiny screen. you have your good and your bad. not everyone who is dling music and movies and pictures, and ect is bad people. are you selling it? making some kind of profit? are you dling it for your enjoyment and entertainment? to tell you the truth we pay taxes, we work our asses off to build a community. we are not the rich we are not the famous. I'm getting f**king tired of being picked on because they call us bad people. if it wasn't for us the (ants), the grasshoppers would have no way of getting food. so we slave, and they keep us occupied with television, new cars, computers, hi tech tools. DVDs, ect........... temptations? they are all drugs to lure us in this unhealthy, impure way of life. and it works. every f**king day the more we spend the more we lose. so do I think you are a bad person for dling music. NO. because from a musician like myself. it was meant to be FREE. its only stealing and illegal to sell a product not yours. to own it as your own, I believe is not. by the way we can all thank money hungry I'm a fag lars ulrich for this motivation and terrorist act. unfortunately, the RIAA can go to hell. you live once, you die once, f**k it,, I'll see you there. there are people out there who are doing more crimes out of action. but they pick on the little people like us. overthrow the government. give what they took from us. OH so its our right to act as a civil human being at this day and age. its got to be put down on paper from to what we have to wear and say and act and f**k that. the one thing we should all do is this, take your computer. turn it off. grab a bat, and bash the living s**t out of it. its just gong to get you into trouble with temptation. to download all you desire, cause remember your not rich, but its makes you feel important. if you choose to, download. feel free. give yourself that right for once. the purities of life await. and music is finally free from those chains. money isn't everything. people need to understand that. s**t i would feel honored to know that all those people downloading my bands songs love our music and will see a greater amount of fans and friends at concerts. OH besides, metal music isn't really a threat.its all that popular music like rap and country and pop and all that bulls**t lol.
"But it has a serious flaw - in order to actually consume the media at all, in this case watch the movie, in order to actually have that movie presented to him in any form - he would have, at some point, had to have paid money for it."Then by that reasoning, if you merely LEND a dvd or cd to a friend (and that happens often worldwide every single day), then your friend is "stealing", since he's not paid to view (consume) the content.
so, I have, on occasion, been a lawyer - the whole point of law is kind of simple - the law is a system of rules for the sociopaths (about one of every 25 Americans) who have no sense of compassion, empathy or fairness due to a genetic defect that prevents them from bonding with other living creatures - oh, yeah, and for the morons who cannot figure out how to cross the street without a street light.. Observing the current popularity of vampire lore, my guess it we are living in a culture of morons with sociopath envy. But for those of you who are maybe, not sociopaths, or sociopath wanna-bees, or morons, you don't need the law. do you actually know any musicans? yeah, making music takes a lot of time and a certain lifestyle, which is not usually conducive to the productive of a regular paycheck, and you know drugs are not free, like they should be. So those of you who say artists don't do it for the money - look inside your cheating hearts and ask why, for your own ego and your own vanity, you have to rip these people off so you can feel cool about your "collection" while the creator is, like, on foodstamps. Common people - let's talk about what's human instead of what we can get away with. Let's think about where we want to take the world - not just how to scum around in it. Like why is legal music on the web sent to me in a lossy codec? That sucks.
