In Cirque Du Soleil's Varekai, there actually is an act in which the 'clown' of the show does an absolutely hilarious version of this song without managing to ruin it.
I've always been more impressed by his heart-rending lyrics than his melodies. But his singing just blows me away. I saw the exhibition "Un soir avec brel" in Brussels. It brought you on a trip into a hotel, upstairs to his dressing room (complete with ashtray), backstage and then into a 60s provincial cafe for an apr?s-gig drink. Cool.

Why is he being buried? That's the name of the whistling instrument in the background of the last minute.

Don't skip the opening! The buildup is part of the effect. I still get chills ...Is there an artist performing today who can do this?

Damn your interpretations. Interpreting art for others is one of the last true sins.
