networkworld.com — Getting started with Linux can be an intimidating task, particularly for people who have never tried any operating system besides Windows. In truth, however, very little about Linux is actually difficult to use. It's simply a different OS, with its own approach to doing things.

FreeBSD?

@arbulusYes Wine does function as a layer of abstraction between the Linux APIs and the Windows APIs. There is no abstraction between non Windows specific API calls, however. So it's not fully abstracted, but partially in specific use cases.

How come there's so many books on sale in bookshops telling people how to use Windows and OS X?

Better idea would be to run the CLI install in a VM such as Virtualbox. Taught me loads about Linux, and I can still use the host OS to get online and research problems.

A spare computer...why? Scared of using links?Oh, and also, use the csh or zsh shell. It makes things quite fun!

And all this because Fedora doesn't get as much attention?Look, as someone on the Linux side of so many discussions, surely you know by now that folks start using the latest-greatest thing and like to babble about it to others--especially when there are so many others out there that are using it. The Ubuntu buzz will eventually fade and something else will take its place--yes perhaps even Fedora will again one day.Spewing fanboy comments gratuitously around just about every time you see an Ubuntu post just makes you look like a bitter, jealous Fedora fanbitch.Disclaimer: I like Fedora also and know full well that it has many superior qualities. I do run Ubuntu exclusively at the moment--yes, I'm a fanboy--but that too will not last forever.
