gizmodo.com — Since AT&T's unlocked iPhone 3Gs will cost you $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB), you are better off signing a contract and canceling it than buying an unlocked iPhone. In fact, it's even cheaper to buy a 16GB iPhone using this method than to buy and unlock an 8GB version.

Its definitely not so easy as it seems. Better wait rather than waste time in lines on July 11th.

This is definitely something to consider. I was ready to buy the iPhone 3G legit come July 11th in Canada through Rogers but upon hearing their price plans I decided I wasn't willing to bend over that much. Maybe this way I can have my iPhone 3G cake and eat it too.

If you buy an iPhone with at&t contract and your friend wants one too but with t-mobile or whatever this is how it works: go buy an iPhone with contract for you and "lose" it after a few days, sell it to your friend, then go tell at&t you lost your iPhone and that you buy a new one with the same phone number and under the same contract.

You have to keep the contract for a month. After that, they won't expect a return of the equipment. Yours free and clear after paying the early termination fee.

@jrwr,Actually I was planning to buy an unlocked/SIM Free iPhone on the internet to make it work with my Rogers plan that I currently have with my Motorola phone. I'm sure policies are not the same for Rogers, but I'll definitely check in store to upgrade my phone.. The only problem in Canada w/ Rogers & Fido: the price of voice/data plans. Pricey as hell. Anyways thanks for reminding us that there are still options with our phone carrier.
