computerworld.com — That tablet by your bedside, the netbook you use on the commuter train, the 3G smartphone that's always within reach and other office technologies that were supposed to improve white-collar productivity instead are driving us to distraction.

It's easy to say such things but can you prove it?

Though white color jobs themselves are mostly goofing off - in the sense that they don't actually produce anything of value directly. That job itself is a luxury that owes its existence to technology. That said, sure middle-management-politics is a fun game, often played largely on computers, and yes it is time consuming.

Both...that's why this generation is even more busy and stressed out.

Is productivity spending a day using excel or spending a day with a calculator, or spending a day with a slide rule?

If you use technology to do stupid things, then that is because you want to do stupid things. Surfing from work is the new "hanging out at the water cooler".

What's productive? I use technology to make my life easier it's not there so I can do even more work.I'm not a data entry slave, where my key presses are being counted. I'm not assembly line worker.I use the old star trek scotty method of productive performance.Over estimate the amount of time a give task will take, finish it in one quarter of the time.Deliver it just before it's do.. You just made yourself a lot of free time. for your wow, twitter, facebook, surfing porn. What every floats your boat.

As someone that programs software, I must say without technology I would be very unproductive.

It gives us better productivity so we can waste more time with it and pretend that we still need 9 to 5 jobs to get all our work done.
