screenrant.com — Neilsen Ratings are the measurement of selected "families" who actually sit down to watch television programs. This tells me that networks tend to rely on the black and white data, and not consider what the "unnoticed" audience watches.

I'm constantly finding more Firefly fans. You're right, though; a lot of people suck at SOD, even in cases where it doesn't seem like it should be very hard, e.g. accepting that Serenity is a home to her crew at least as much as their own house is a home to them.

I was just pondering this while watching the Oscars a couple weeks ago. I was trying to think of what scifi movies had gotten decent recognition. Unfortunately, nerds are a minority and they don't have much swing as far as ratings go. I am quite happy Heroes is doing so well, despite the fact that I'm not a fan of it. I suppose tv execs like playing it safe and conservative, where scifi tends to push the boundaries of modern philosophy and customs. They'd rather go with what works than lose on something that might actually influence people.

We need something new in Sci-Fi and FF was it. I'm tired of the tired old plot line of, Humans fight aliens, human's make friends with some aliens to fight other aliens. Humans make sweet love to aliens and have babies that look like Ferangi. bla bla bla. Firefly was kinda fresh in that it didn't have the stereotypical plot lines that most sci-fi have.

Yes, Jericho, made it back onto the air for season 3 after the fans complained, but USA network won't listen to the fans and renew the 4400.George

The industry definitely needs to broaden the metrics used for measuring viewership. Content is delivered so much differently today than in the 50’s. The old standards of media measurement are simply outdated. That isn’t to say Nielsen rating are meaningless, but they certainly don’t paint the whole picture. Until the industry figures out better methods, and more importantly convince sponsors that these new methods are accurate, really good sci-fi programming will continue to die on the vine.
