arstechnica.com — In a strong letter to Congress, the Department of Justice objected to a plan that could make it a pro bono copyright lawyer for groups like the RIAA—even though any money it collects would go back to rightsholders.

Anyone else tired of this "Big" crap? "Big Business" "Big Pharma".. now "Big Content"?? I'm not saying I support any of these percieved groups at all, but at the same time it has such a whiny connotation to it.

I was never arguing that, I was just saying the names people apply to these organisations are a bit daft. Maybe it's simpler to say "Big Content" than "RIAA & MPAA" for example but it also perpetuates an excuse for stand-offishness and vague propoganda on both sides.

And you don't have the right to make copies. You can't get around it. You'll have to argue against the right of property to do so. You don't get to decide what their business practices are either. You don't get to decide on pricing, format or anything else. You are free to make your own s**t music and post it for free on youtube, along with the other millions of people who make s**t music and post it on youtube that you never heard about and never will. There's absolutely nothing you can come up with that will make you logically argue that you have the right to copy their property or gain possession of it without paying them. Especially with rights being given by the state. You're a thief. So am I, but at least I'm honest about it. I don't pretend that I'm somehow justified, that would be really stupid.

"I face fines IF I redistribute, but that's not the same as having the right to stop me copying."Yawn. If you downloaded it, you are getting it from someone who distributes it. Stolen goods. Otherwise you paid for it. You get ONE copy. That's what you paid for. "I'm not aware of any of these p2pers going to prison or facing fines for copying. Did I miss that?"Yes, you did. What do you think the term "COPY RIGHT" refers to? This is ridiculous.

well, it was kind of you to explain it. However, I don't believe any money collected in these stupid law suits goes towards anything but funding more law suits. If you can find ANY artist that's actually benefitted financially from the RIAA's thuggery, please tell us who they are. (Note: None of us will be holding our breath waiting for that name, because you won't find one).
