news.aol.com— Wheelchair-bound Tom Mundy has been unemployed for the past two years. Yet he's still making six figures by what some call "legal extortion," but what he says is advocacy.

If you cant lift your arm(s) up then you don't need to reach the windshield squeegie do you? If you have problems with your arms you shouldn't be driving, get the person who drove you to clean the windshield. Every gas station I've been to has a sign that says if you can't pump your own gas then honk your horn and someone will come out and help you if they can.
Yes, and Midtowner, things like this are exactly why California has become a dump that is going bankrupt, whereas my state which doesn't even require sole proprietors like me to file a return or pay ANY income tax unless I incorporate, Texas, is earning billions in surplus.Business cannot cater to every minority and problem customer, especially in recessions like this. Is it a restaurant's job to take care of the disabled? No, that's a hospitals. Restaurants get paid to serve food. If the disabled were an important customer, they would put in amenities to serve them naturally to increase business. But guess what? They're not. Tough luck. We can't have businesses failing and leaving thousands of customers in the dark just because one handicapped guy was "inconvenienced".Have fun with California when it bankrupts, and social services stop being provided and it descends into civil anarchy.
- "So there's a side bar, but no rear"- "Right."- "So that'll get you $1,000?"- " .... I can't use the toilet."
Jingo, the A.D.A. is a federal law -- and yes, in the state of Texas, the federal law still applies. Texas has its own compliance regime which probably costs the state money. California, on the other hand does not grow government one iota and is probably more effective at encouraging compliance. It's smart policy, really. This isn't 'catering to some minority' this is following a federal law.Big picture? Yeah, Texas does a hell of a lot of things right, and from a government standpoint, I think does a better job than California (the little trip by your legislature to Oklahoma a few years back notwithstanding). Small picture? If the state actually wants compliance with the A.D.A., California's approach is about the smartest I've seen.
this is an awesome opportunity for a more ethical person to get ahead of him and approach any and all businesses that the guy would likely target and get them to meet specs, eventually causing Mr. Extortion's income to dry up.
ok.It's wrong to abuse the system like that...on the other hand If you open a business knowing certain accomodations need to be made for the disabled such as ramps & bathrooms & you try to avoid making those accomodations you probably deserve to be sued & don't even cry economic difficulties, It's all a tax write-off as a business expense.Clearly most of you haven't experienced being wheelchair bound & being denied entrance to a store or eatery because of a single step & no ramp.
