I used to work at DirectBuy. It is a legitamate company, The thing that scares people is what is said many times in the article, that it's a one time shot. You go to an open house and must sign a contract on-the-spot or never return. If you do buy a lot of stuff (when building a new house for example) you can save a lot of money (which is also said a few times in the article) and it's totaly worth it. If you are thinking of going in to buy just a big screen tv once and not go back often, of course you will think it's a scam, because the high cost of membership (~$3000).
I made the mistake of paying and joining best buy. For the next two years I tried to find something, anything that was actually cheaper at best buy. By the time they add in horribly expensive shipping and processing fees every time I beat the price buying retail. I have tried to get an answer from the local owners or manager and been placed on an ignore list because I ask questions. Be it a large or small purchase you are better buying retail! This may be a legit business, but if you join you will regret it!
They do have good buys, that is if you can get a hold of catalogs. They basically have one of each and people generally hang on to them for a long time when they get them.Their online catalog is always down and when it is up, it has the worst search keys.People who man the desks when you go there are generally friendly but do not know the products.I am a member and I feel I was my money on the membership
Today I went to DirectBuy presentation. I filled an application and one of the question mentioned if I am single or married. I checked married. The lady asked me where is my wife? I told her she is at home taking care of our son. She said my wife must be present. I told her what if I were single!. She said could you make a purchase of 5000 dollars at the end of the presentation. I told her of course. We went through a video presentation where the narrator was showing how much we can save on different items. At the end of presentation she showed the cost of membership which runs in 5000 dollars!. Then she took us to another presentation room and showed book catalogs of furnitures and kitchens then she assigned sales person to each couple and individual. The lady expalined me what are you needs based on the survey that I have filled. The prices were amazingly good. I text message my wife about the price of membership and she replied? What? is it justified. I said thank you to the sales person and told her I need to go and see my wife and explain her and will come back. The Boss of the DB was walking arround and asked me why do you want to go to your wife if you know that we can save you money and why did you go through our catalog? I asked him I need to see my wife to expalin her that we can save real money. Then the other sales person that did the presentation came to me and said. You told me that you can make the decision alone for making a 5000 purchase. I replied . yes I did for purchasing items not a membership. She said I told you that your wife had to be there. I replied what is the rush. She said we are closing in 45 minutes you won't have time. I said I live close by but what is the real rush!. if this is a 2 years plus another 8 years comittment what is the rush. The Boss of the company said. Why did you ask all these questions if you knew that you don't want to become member. I told him . That is not what I said. I want to share the information with my wife and then come back and sign the paper work but you are just wasting my time. You want me to rush and get my 5000 dollars. Something is not right. I read lots of blog online and thanks God I did not join. I have never seen that before. They tried to put me on the spot and get my5000 dollars. I don't care if you can get your 5000 dollars back by purchasing items and before entering the game put you under pressure. If everything is legit then potential customers must have the right to make decisions once they are out of the DB. Here are some links I found online. Please read on the information and pass on. It will save you lots of pressure to make a big decision like spending 5000 dollars on a Saturday afternoon. http://www.infomercialblog.com/?p=84 http://www.infomercialblog.com/former_direct_buy_e ... another testimonial: http://33ad.org/blog/index.php?blog=2&title=direct ...
I, too, walked out of the showroom because of the "pay on the spot or else" policy. Any sales person that is high pressure automatically loses my busines. Also, unless you are willing to buy more than $20,000 for their stuff, you won't break even. Why don't they share those statistics in their presentation?
I wish I would have did my research before my wife and I went to the open house today. I would have many more questions to challenge what they say they are about. Maybe I'm crazy for not writting a check for $4500.00 to just anybody, but unless it is the IRS I have a choice and will not be pressured into something I may look back on as a bad idea. If DB is such a great thing, why don't they make it very clear on the front end all of the delivery charges and other fees, inventory, and products they have. Sams and CostCo both offer that information and don't make you sit through a 2 hour lecture about how DB is the best thing since slice bread. My wife and I felt like we were ripped off for just going to the open house. It reminded us of being offered a free vacation to Florida if we spend a couple hours to listen to a time share opprotunity without the free vacation, WHAT A SCAM!!!!! To say the least we did not write a check for $4,500.00 today to DB. Why do they think people will be willing to invest that kind of money without thinking about it first. That's the other scary part of all of this, people do because from what I learned today they have been in business for about 40 years.

I don't doubt that it is a legit company, I only question if they follow an ethical sales guideline.

This sounds exactly like the time I went to a timeshare presentation to get a discount on some sightseeing tours.
