In order to reduce demand we need to begin investing in oil alternatives.

Got a 401K? Probably owns an index fund and several mutual funds with BP in the portfolio, I guarantee it! Better look in the mirror.......

what you need to remember is that BP is the result of a merger with AMOCO and actually around 60% of its stock is US based. Its actually more american than British. The reason its in trouble is the US government forced out the Brits and insisted AMERICANS had to be in charge of all BP's US operations and consequently the resulting screw ups. lucklily now there seems to be no problem bringing in Brits and Norweigans in to sort out another US led screw up. What this also means is that any suspension of dividends will affect US citiszens and investors equally.

Poor decision making respects no political boundary. All of mankind is equally prone to thinking they have all the correct answers and there are no risks that cannot be mitigated, hence the sinking of the Titanic. At some point we will likely poison this planet beyond the capacity of sustaining life, at which point we will hear humanities last words, which will sound something like "Damn, I never thought that could happen." I hope it is not within our lifetimes but I am wise enough to know it is certainly possible. BP is a symptom, the problem is much larger and the capitalist system is not built on solving problems, but on sustaining revenue through any means no matter how despicable, dangerous or destructive. If someone invents a method of burning seawater, we will drain the oceans, it is the nature of our economic system to destroy ourselves. We need clean safe energy, but right now there is not enough profit in that and there are huge sunk costs in the existing status quo along with a tax structure that rewards the continued destruction of whatever is necessary to sustain production of coal and oil. We are burning our clothing to stay warm, I guess we all know how that will turn out.
