video.on.nytimes.com — New video technology that maps facial expressions to 3d models. It doesn't use sensors, just video and complicated math algorithms. It's more realistic than anything we've seen in movies to date. I'm convinced it has a real future.

There's still one problem, what I call the "Lucas" factor - Getting actors to deliver a convincing performance for this capture in front of a green screen, without interacting with anyone or anything to produce convincing reactions. Go and try to get angry with the wall because you imagined it telling you something you didn't want to hear, or have someone tell you something you don't want to hear, and see which one is easier to react to.

This just crashes my browser too! Had to pull up Task Manager to sort it. It was using up 99% of processor time! Anybody have a link to a YouTube version or do I have to try it again with (gak!) IE?

We saw the fictional version of this in theaters already as Simone. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0258153/

s1m0ne, the running man, two obvious examples of the 'ideal' texture-mapping technology in play. the reality though, is probably a little less comfy, rendering a full-body digitally and not making it look creepy or mannequin-like is the current limit of most 3D rendered art. impressive facial animation can be quite realistic and impressive, but it is going to be hard for people to be impressed until you see rotoscope'd pr0n videos and dead actors on well-lit stages walking out to talk to the crowd. digital actors are an intriguing area of the 21st century film industry, maybe more so when cinema goes fully 3D and older movies need to be restored/enhanced to the new formats.
